It would be nice to have a multiplayer forum where users could do things like share their servers, coordinate times to be online, ask for help starting their own servers, etc...

Private server, just like any other server, costs money. There are multiple tutorials on how to set them up and how to join them. You'll find most of them under the videos sub forum.
