I guess I can see some logic in not giving the banner for getting them in trades, but perhaps allow through hatching too? It's virtually the same chance (aside from the Odd Egg).

The Day-Care Man should give the Odd Egg to you when you speak to him after updating to 0.36.X Indev.

I never checked to see if the Egg had a star, all I knew that it was a Cleffa (PC bug) because I had given up by then. I guess the game pitied me and wanted to finally give it to me.
