just soft-reset untill you get a star on the egg "Shiny egg" - its a glitch, but it helps in knowing the pokemon inside is shiny > this saves you the effort of hatching the eggs when you get them.

The Shiny egg will take about 30'720 steps to hatch.

You can just look at the egg in the party summary and see if it is shiny or not.

you certainly did waste time, but yeah, you'll spend more then an hour running around trying to hatch the shiny egg.

Don't worry in a month at most, everyone will have the shinys from the odd egg event. I got a magby and cleffa.
