Also, it seems as if every trainer has some kind of vs screen before battle, like this one:

I am thinking maybe what you are seeing as free movement might be orthogonal grid based(8 directions)
every thing is still seems too rigid looking to me to be free movement(look at the long grass)
I would def want free movement but from what I see it won't be in...
