You can catch a Heracross by using headbutt at the small trees on various routes. You may have to backtrack a bit though, as far as I know, there is no Pokemon hiding in the trees on route 34, I don't know about route 35, because I have not been there yet. You can get a Phanpy on route 46.

Check the wiki entry for more info on Phanpy: http://pokemon3d.net/wiki/index.php?title=Pokémon_List/Phanpy

And for info on route 46, including the spawn rate of Phanpy during different daytimes: http://pokemon3d.net/wiki/index.php?title=Route_46

for me Arca>Thyplo for 3 reasons:
1) I can get as starter Totodile.. and it one beast pokemon (frost bite/Crunch/Earthquake/Brick Break/Waterfall/Surf)
and after breed he can learn also:
Father Psyduck/Slowpoke> Water Pulse
Father Whooper> Mud sport for -70% ele dmg
Most powerfull water poke ever for me :3

2)He got Flesh Fire Ability.. so he is immunite to fire dmg
with his High stat its a big Wall for other Fire pokes

3) Great move pool:
Outrage- one beast dragon attack, and if trained in speed can K.O other Dragons
FlareBlitz- if somone is not prepared and will hit him with fire attack... FlareBlitz will K.O other Fire pokes... its beasty 400 attack move after Flash Fire active
Thunder Fang- to counter water pkmns
if breed can learn:
Vulpix- Fire Spin (counter swap)
Mankey- Close Combat (next superior power attack)

its possible to roll 3/4 game with Totodile/Growlith :> but mostly i go also with flaffy ^^
