Not confirmed [Indev 0.53.2] No Item Taken from an Opponent if He/She Faints to the Item-Stealing Move

Magi

Pokémon Ranger
I'm getting some wild-Pokemon-held-items with Thief/Frisk but Thief doesn't take the item if the Pokemon faints from it. This is becoming a problem as my Thief/Frisk Pokemon is getting stronger.

What I expected to happen:
Get the wild Pokemon's held item with Thief despite said Pokemon fainting.

What actually happened:
No item. :(

Steps to reproduce:
1. Get a Thief/Frisk Pokemon
2. Level it to a decent level.
3. Try to get some items from weak wild Pokemon.
4. Get no items.

I remember my fearow in pokemon leaf green has thief move, and really high level because it was my main pokemon beside my starter. At low level, I usually used it to gather some mushrooms from paras at cerulean, after it touch lv 50, I can't use thief again because it always 1HKO paras, so I can't gather mushrooms anymore. So, maybe this is not a bug.

After some googling and research, it turns out in generation III Thief only had a chance of stealing an item anyways and wasn't guaranteed, so you could have just been extremely unlucky. This was changed in generations IV, V, and VI.

But I know for a fact it works if the Pokemon faints. I've spent lots of time on Alpha Sapphire with a capped-out Frisk Banette getting Heart Scales and Lucky Eggs from Luvdisc and Pelipper.
