The feature is open however, you can only talk to other players and you cannot do anything cooperatively yet. Go to a Pokemon Center and go to the counter to the left. Either host a game or join a game. If you want to join a game, you must have the IP address of the host. If you host, someone must have your IP to connect.

You can connect over a wireless connection. Each computer on your wireless network will have its own internal IP address different from you global IP. Dependent on your router the IP address of your computer will be something like 192.168.0.3 or 192.168.1.2. You can find the address of your computer on your router menus or through command prompt (using 'ipconfig' command, listed as IPv4 address)

Those are just for online play, LAN will work without any port forwarding etc because you're using addresses on the LAN, not the internet where you are actually behind your router (in this case your external IP is your router!). You need only know your own IP address, you can get it with those other methods but you can also get it by just looking at your network adapter's details

Easier way to get your IP address:
  • Hit Win + R
  • Type "cmd" (without quotes)
  • Hit Enter
  • Type "ipconfig /all" (without quotes)
You get all connected adapters with their IP addresses.
