A Beginner's Guide to Pokémon 3D! ~by Smasher

1- Let's begin with the first thing, which confuses most beginners. What should I play, Offline mode or Online mode? How do they work?
Pokémon 3D has two modes of playing: Online and Offline modes. Offline mode is by now, pretty "useless". It's main goals by now are bug-testing. In this mode, you can't trade Pokémon with others, but you can still play the co-op mode, which involves connecting to another person's game and playing with them.
Co-op by now is only the interaction of two players by chatting them and seeing them in the world, but as of now, we can't battle or anything.
Online mode requires you to create a Gamejolt ID(account), you can do it by clicking this link: http://gamejolt.com/auth/sign_up/ . You can also connect it to a Facebook or Twitter account. After registering, you can login in-game to start playing online, BUT here comes another tricky part: You won't use your password to login in-game, you'll use a "token". But...where is this token? Simple, after logging in/registering in Gamejolt, you should click this button in the Gamejolt website:
Then, a mix of numbers and letters will appear, this is your token, enter it in-game and play!
But what is the difference between online and offline modes? In Online mode, you can trade with other players, you can appear in the global ranklist, you can have ranks and it's way better than Offline mode. But let's suppose you started a game in Offline mode, can you "transfer" your game to Online mode? No, simply no, and that's why I highly recommend starting with Online mode!

2- This is my first Pokémon game/ I haven't played Pokémon games in a while/ I don't know very much about Pokémon!
You don't need to be a Pokémon master to play Pokémon 3D, but you need some knowledge...First, what starter should I pick?
Chikorita- In general, Chikorita isn't bad, but this gen totally wrecks it. It's a defensive Pokémon, with weakness to 3 of the gym leader types and 1 of the E4 types, really sad...Evolves into Bayleef, another pure grass type at level 16 and at level 32 to Meganium, another pure grass type. Meganium isn't bad, but is defensive and isn't the best for beginners. It has 100 in both defenses. It's not horrible and I'm not saying you can't pick it, just pick it if you like it the best.
Cyndaquil- In general, Cyndaquil is probably the best starter for Gen II. It has a good Sp. Atk, it's offensive, being effective against 3 of the gym leader types, and still being very useful in-game. Evolves into Quilava at 14 and Typhlosion at 36, all pure fire types. Typhlosion can cause many problems to it's foes with his fire moves and base 109 Special Attack. But he takes some time to learn useful moves.
Totodile- In general, Totodile is the average starter, not being weak or effective on any of the gym leader types...Evolves at level 18 to Croconaw and 30 to Feraligatr, being totally physically offensive, and having enough physical defense, they're also all pure water types. Totodile competes for the place of "best" starter in Gen II with Cyndaquil, it's up to you to choose your starter, tough.
I won't cover basic Pokémon mechanics here, but I'll give you some useful links to learn more about if you're really new to all this. Totodile has good coverage and can hit very hard with his moves that he learns really soon.

3- I can't beat a gym leader(especially Falkner/Whitney)! How to make my Pokémon stronger?
Well, beating gym leaders isn't an easy task, after all, they're the game "bosses". You can check type charts to bring a Pokémon with advantage on the gym leader's type, but remember there are always exceptions. If you want to train your Pokémon, defeat all trainers, don't avoid any fight, being it a trainer or a wild battle, always use your Pokémon to level up as much as you can, if you want an average/good level to have at every gym leader battle, I'll show it here:
-Falkner- Use Pokémon at levels 9-11
-Bugsy- Use Pokémon at levels 14-18
-Whitney- Use Pokémon at levels 19-24 (yes, or else whitney will wreck you)
-Morty- Use Pokémon at levels 25-28
-Chuck- Use Pokémon at levels 28-31
-Jasmine- Use Pokémon at levels 31-34
-Pryce- Use Pokémon at levels around 35-36
-Clair- Use Pokémon at levels 38-41
-Elite 4 and Champion- Use Pokémon at levels 43-53
I'll later do a topic about places to train your Pokémon.

4- How do you trade?
With the GTS, Global Trade Station, which is used to trade Pokémon with players all over the world. It only works with Online mode players. You can use it to trade...but how? First of all, you need to press "Q" to acces the Pokégear and click the GTS button. Keep in mind you must've talked to Bill and to any Nurse Joy to have this option. There are four buttons in the GTS.
Inbox- Check if anyone sent you a Pokémon.
Search- You can search for what other trainers are looking for and requesting.
Setup- Setting a trade you want, sending a Pokémon...
Exit- Quit the GTS.
If you want a private trade, you'll need to be friends with someone, log into the Gamejolt website to friend requests and stuff. That's the very basic for GTS.

5- My Pokémon learned a move, but it turns into Pound! What happened? What are those models in battle?
Ok, before even starting this one, I'll tell you. As of 0.37 the game's still IN-DEV, not even alpha or beta, this way, there's much to be done. The battle system has changed a lot and the moves that we had before were deleted. This way, most of the "strong" moves are switched to Pound, this will be solved with an update, I don't know what update, but in the future you won't have this problem.
Again, this game is in it's early versions. The battle system changed a lot, and now it has two options configurable in the battle system: 3D models and Overworld Sprites. Overworld Sprites are pretty much the graphics of the Pokémon following you, but 3D models are advanced models. Some may look weird, but they're still in early development and need a lot of things like lighting, more models...

6- What are unobtainable Pokémon? What is breeding?
Some Pokémon can't be obtained, but they're still in the game files(Treecko, Lotad...), but some other Pokémon are called "unobtainable", but I've seen trainers with them(Scyther, Snorlax...)! Well, every day has a daily competition, which once in a month gets someone an unobtainable Pokémon. The person who gets it, sometimes breeds it and gives away the eggs. This way, some are only possible to get by trading. Now, how did they breed their Pokémon? Using the Daycare. I won't explain the basic daycare logics, but if you want to get another from a species, put the species in the Daycare along with a Ditto, they'll breed as long they are breedable(Some Pokémon can't breed, like Legendaries and others). After putting them, walk around and you may get a chance to get an egg. It may take some time of walking, every 255 steps has some chance of getting you an egg, which also takes steps to hatch.

7- What Pokémon should I catch to my team?
If you want a strong team, you need to choose different types of Pokémon, but always remember that typing isn't everything, some Pokémon are better than other because of their moves and even because of stats. Here's a type chart anyway:

You should choose what to catch yourself.
@Dratini made a not-so-small list of Pokémon he thinks that are good (only to beat the game, not PvP) :
-Mareep (Thunder Wave and Electro Ball)
-Magnemite (Tanky, Sp. Dmg, Wall)
-Geodude (Stealth Rock, Heavy Dmg, Phys Wall at 48lvl can solo Lance)
-Nidoran(M/F) (Nidoking/Queen move Versality, huge DMG)
-Growlithe (Arcanine move diversity, speed, huge DMG)
-Ponyta ( Rapidash speed, huge DMG, some great moves can sweep Dark type with Mega Horn)
-Zubat with Friend Ball (Crobat Speed, and DMG)
-Ghastly (Gengar Sp. Attack and Speed, Some move diversity)
-Machop (best Fight pkmn, easy sweep Dark type)
-Tentacool (Great Water Wall with some nice moves)
-Shelder (Cloyster ability to Wall, and SNOWball Dragons i mean Ice attack)
-Seel(Deewgong HP and strong Sp.Attack)
-Jinx (Fast and Great Sp.Attack psyho/Ice)
-Lapras ( huge HP, nice Defense some cool moves, and good to sweep dragons)
as For Eevee
-Jolteon( Fast Ele, and Hurts with- Thunder Wave, Rain, Thunder)
-Espeon(Fast Psyh with Great Sp. Attack)
-Umbreon (Heavy tank in both spec, can also do some solid dmg)
-Glaceon (Fast Ice Hail/Blizzard will clean any Evasive pkmn like Muk/Double team users, sadly snow cloak seems not work yet)

This guide will be continued later! I'm also accepting ideas for new topics for the guide.
Topics to do: Safari Zone, Useful training areas.

What will happen with this game in the future?
Many people wonder what will happen with this game in the future... They ask the Staff about what they are going to do, what they are going to add, which regions they are going to work on, etc.
This post should clarify all these questions.
This is a fan-made game and only has a small team working on it. These members are working hard and are very dedicated. They listen to your suggestions and help you when you are in need.
They work on this Pokemon3D game with the intention of re-creating ALL the regions of all the Pokemon games in 3D form. This also means that the graphics of your surroundings will change as you enter a new region. This also means that they will be linking all the regions with each other and thus you can start in Kanto and end in Unova or even Kalos. This pretty much is a ''Walk through Pokemon Time'', at least that is how I call it.
Once multiple regions are implemented, you will be able to choose in which region you will start and go to the other regions after beating the E4 of the region you started in. Once you continue onwards into the next region, you will have to leave all your Pokemon behind and start a new, you may or may not be able to take 1 Pokemon of your choice with you, but it would probably be newly generated to avoid steamrolling the new region and ofcourse you will be able to choose your starter from that new region. However, after you defeat the E4 of the new region, you'll be able to access the Pokemon from your previous region again.
How would the transition from region to region work?
They might add a custom story line between the regions like Ash did in the Anime. You go per boat, train or any other vehicle to the other region and you start your adventure there.
Other than that, they might also implement some custom maps or change a couple of things in an event. A good example of a custom map is the ''Twirl Forest''. What is the Twirl Forest you ask?
The Twirl Forest is a map made from scratch by Nilllzz. The map is mainly a maze and contains a couple of Pokemon you cannot catch since the Pokemon will merely block your Pokeballs. You'll be able to reach that place by taking the train in Goldenrod City, no ticket needed.
More information will be added as more information is released. -@MrHippocrit

Amazing stuff so far man, wish this was around when I started playing at the start of the week and couldn't figure out the gamejolt stuff! A couple things I'd like to point out though. When you said
you can have ranks and it's way better than Online mode
I think you meant to type offline mode. Also as far as starters go in my personal experience despite typhlosions powerful sp.atk and stab flamethrower he is actually pretty cripplingly useless until he learn flamethrower because until he learns it at lvl 48, ember is his most powerful available attack. given that the only other specially based fire attacks he learns are unimplemented until flamethrower at lvl 48 and he doesn't have access to his only other strong move in focus blast his shallow movepool can be a massive hamper on a persons team. Mine is lvl 55 and still knows smokescreen! In my opinion totodile is the best starter for this game just for his access to stab waterfall and crunch/ fighting moves for nice coverage. As for topic ideas for the guide I think recommended movepools or simple an explaination of whats good and why could be a neat topic to cover. Knowing whether its safe to overwrite and attack with sometihng that wont just end up being pound would be a great boon to new players getting into the game. All in all amazing stuff man keep up the good work![Spoiler/]

9- Safari Zone, how to get to it? What is it? What to do in there?
The safari zone is an area next to Route 48, which is next to Route 47, that can be accessed through the Cliff Edge Gate, which is acessible from Cianwood after Amphy's cure is brought. It's an area full of pokémon, some from other generations like 3rd, 4th and 5th. You need to pay 500 to get in, then you're given 30 Safari balls to hunt some Pokémon. You can't take any Pokémon there, you'll go catch them using the following objects:
Mud- Is infinite, if threw at Pokémon, will make them easier to catch, but also eager to run away.
Bait- Is infinite, if threw at Pokémon, will make them harder to catch, but lower their chances of running away.
Safari Ball- Safari Balls are the only Pokéballs you can use to catch Pokémon in there, they have a regular catch rate and are limited to 30.
You can walk through 7 areas before you're kicked out. You can also be kicked if you run out of Safari Balls. There are 11 different areas. And this is a list of the base forms of Pokémon that can be obtained there and nowhere else:

As of 0.42.
Ps: Pokémon in my party don't really count...only the ones in the BOXes.
Ps2: Spiritomb and Larvesta aren't catchable in the Safari Zone either.

10- My Pokémon are way too weak! I need them to level up, but where? I've fighted every trainer until now...
If you beat the game, the E4 is the best place to level up, as of 11/05/13, but if you haven't and still need to train, you have two ways, paying someone here on the forums for training it or doing it yourself. You can even pay me to do it...but training it yourself is the best option. Here I'll say the best places to train at certain points in the game:
Before battling Falkner- Route 32.
Before battling Bugsy- Route 33.
Before battling Whitney- Route 36.
Before battling Morty- Route 39.
Before battling Chuck- Route 41 for water and Route 39 for grass.
Before battling Jasmine- Same as above...
Before battling Pryce- Same as above...
Before battling Clair- Route 45.
Before the E4- Victory Road.
Of course, you should battle trainers every time when possible to get to higher levels faster.

Final Topic (at least until more content is suggested)
Useful links:

Secrets:
There are two easter egg areas that have headbutt trees with 2 rare pokemon each area, making a total of new 4 rare pokémon. To access them you need to go through a fake tile, that's either a tree or a rock.

This guide will be continued later! I'm also accepting ideas for new topics for the guide.

Well, the competition for best starter of 2nd Gen never ends, that's probably the only Gen like that, but I thank you so much for suggestions, thanks for remembering me about the "Pound".
Also, I picked Cyndaquil for "probably the best starter" is for his advantages in the Pokémon gyms

Include something about what types of pokemans to put on your team. Right now, your guide is telling people to solo the game with cyndaquil or totodile

Lol I did that and look where it got me (signature). By that I mean it's the only one I trained. I like to call it the OT strategy (if anyone would ever call it a strategy), but it has done me good for every single game up to date (including X and this one).

Sorry, but I'm not sure if this guide is good enough already...I think it is, but do you think this could have any additional topics? Maybe some topic including useful links?
Ps: I know this thread is old, but I think if it's for this kind of cause, I can post it here. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Really, there are people who still didn't find the thing?
Yup, younglings, most likely. (I think Martin is one of them.)
And there was another one added in 0.40, could do that one, though make sure to warn them.
