After talking to your rival in Sprout Tower, if you lose to the top trainer in the tower (the one that gives you HM Flash), you are sent back to the Pokemon Center (as you should be). When you return your rival is there again and when you talk to him he gives the same dialogue as when you met him outside of Elm's laboratory and pushes you away in the same path as when you met him there. I have not tested if it is the same when you leave the tower after seeing your rival but before battling the top trainer.
